Criminal Court Cases in Sullivan County
Sullivan County divides criminal work by stage. Magisterial District Court 44-3-03 handles preliminary arraignments, bail, preliminary hearings, criminal and search warrants, and nonjury summary or traffic trials. When a misdemeanor or felony is held for court or the hearing is waived, the prosecution moves to the Court of Common Pleas in the joint 44th Judicial District. The District Attorney may then file a criminal information that sets out the counts pursued in Common Pleas.
The Clerk of Courts keeps the Sullivan County Common Pleas criminal file at 245 Muncy Street, Suite 100, Laporte, PA 18626. The office phone is 570-946-7351. Preliminary and summary files stay with MDJ 44-3-03 in Suite 150, reached at 570-946-4413. This split matters: a lower-court docket can show bail and a preliminary hearing before a Common Pleas docket exists.
The official MDJ page shows the county's lower-court access point.
That office is the right custodian for the earliest public judicial entries in a Sullivan County criminal case.
Sullivan County Court Levels Compared
“Held for court” does not mean convicted. It means an MDJ found enough cause to send the charges forward, or the defendant waived that hearing. The filed information, later motions, plea or verdict, and sentence belong to Common Pleas. A summary offense may remain at MDJ 44-3-03 for a nonjury trial. Readers who check only one level can miss either the opening stage or the final outcome.
Case grades help route the search. F1, F2, and F3 identify felony grades; M1, M2, and M3 identify misdemeanor grades; S denotes a summary offense. The grade shown beside the final disposition matters more than an early police description because charges can be amended or dismissed. Murder sentencing follows its own statute and should not be read as an ordinary F1 entry.
Note: Verify each count separately because one Sullivan County docket can contain both dismissed charges and a conviction on another count.
Sullivan County Case Record Searches
The free Unified Judicial System Web Portal Case Search is the main online route. Use a full docket number from a notice when available. A name search is a fallback, not a positive identity match. Check the selected county, court type, date cues, and case number before relying on a result. The portal provides public docket data, while the clerk supplies paper records, certified copies, and guidance about documents that are not remotely viewable.
- Choose Court of Common Pleas for filed felony or misdemeanor cases, or Magisterial District Court for preliminary and summary matters.

Sullivan County Clerk Case Copies
Not every filed document appears as a downloadable image. A public docket sheet is free online, but motions, orders, exhibits, or certified versions may require a request to the record holder. Ask the Clerk of Courts for a Common Pleas criminal file and MDJ 44-3-03 for a lower-court paper record. State the docket number, party name, document title, and filing date if known. Ask about copy and certification charges before ordering because the accessible county research did not establish a current criminal-copy fee.
Do not send a criminal case request to the county Open Records Officer. Sullivan County expressly excludes criminal and civil cases from that general RTKL route. Judicial files follow the Pennsylvania court access policy and the court custodian's process. The combined Prothonotary and Clerk of Courts page identifies the proper office.
The combined office performs several county functions, so requesters should specify “Clerk of Courts” and the criminal docket number.
What a Criminal Case File Contains
A Sullivan County docket is a case-based judicial record, not a statewide rap sheet. It follows the prosecution from its caption and filing date through each charge and court event. Identity cues help distinguish people with similar names, but full birth dates and other protected identifiers do not appear in public views. The useful reading method is to match the charge sequence with its own disposition and then check the sentence section.
| Docket and court | Case number, court level, county, filing date, status, and caption |
|---|---|
| Parties and counsel | Defendant role, Commonwealth, counsel, and prosecutor when entered |
| Charge details | Sequence, statute, offense text, grade, disposition, and disposition date |
| Bail | Type, amount, percentage, status, authority, and posting data where public |
| Docket events | Complaint, hearings, information, arraignment, motions, plea or trial, orders, and sentence |
| Sentence | Confinement or probation term, credit, concurrent or consecutive relation, and summarized conditions |
| Financial record | Fines, costs, restitution, payments, and remaining balance |
| Remote limits | Public PDF docket sheet, with underlying scanned documents not always available online |
Reading Sullivan County Case Outcomes
A closed status only means the court treats the case as no longer active at that level. It does not tell the result. Read each count for guilty, dismissed, withdrawn, acquitted, nolle prosequi, or another listed disposition. Nolle prosequi is the prosecutor's formal choice not to continue a charge, subject to court procedure. An acquittal is a not-guilty result after trial. ARD is Pennsylvania's pretrial diversion path and can lead to dismissal and expungement after successful completion.

Criminal Case Stages in Sullivan County
Police begin a prosecution with a complaint supported by the available facts. MDJ 44-3-03 handles the first appearance, bail, and the preliminary stage. If the matter moves forward, the Sullivan County District Attorney files or approves charges in Common Pleas. Pretrial motions and conferences shape what evidence and counts remain. A plea or trial produces the disposition, and a conviction leads to sentencing. An appeal or post-sentence filing may add later entries.

Sullivan County Criminal Caseload Context
The UJS county profile reported 50 new Sullivan County criminal cases in 2022 and 42 processed that year. The processed group included 27 guilty pleas, nine diversionary dispositions, three withdrawn or dismissed cases, and three jury trials. Twenty-four cases remained pending at year end. These figures describe one year's court workload, not a current crime rate and not a list of people.
The mix shows why a docket lookup must go beyond the opening charge. Diversion, withdrawal, dismissal, plea, and trial are distinct paths. It also explains why an arrest report or PATCH certificate cannot replace the case file. The court record shows the judicial sequence and the charge-by-charge result. PATCH answers an identity-based repository question instead.
Note: A UJS workload count describes court processing and should never be treated as a live measure of Sullivan County crime.
Access Rules for Case Records
Pennsylvania's Case Records Public Access Policy controls judicial access. Public views omit Social Security numbers, financial account numbers, full birth dates, minor and victim identifiers, and information filed on confidential forms. Juvenile matters are generally confidential. Sealed affidavits and orders, expunged records, and cases under limited access may be absent from a remote Sullivan County search even when an authorized court or agency retains a lawful copy.
Access pointer: Court records go to the Clerk or MDJ under judiciary policy. County administrative records use the Pennsylvania Right-to-Know Law, but Sullivan County excludes criminal cases from its general RTKL address.
If a known case is missing, confirm the spelling, court type, county, number, and filing range. Then call the proper clerk about older paper material, a sealed-document status, or a certified disposition. The Clerk can address its docket, while PSP handles an error in a repository history. For broader distinctions among court, arrest, and repository files, the Sullivan County criminal history overview provides the countywide route.
The Sullivan County Public Defender office is one official court-system contact.
The office is in Suite 230 at the courthouse, while public copies still come from the court that maintains the record.
Sullivan County Citation Warrant Rule
MDJ 44-3-03 publishes a precise local warning: a person has ten days after receiving a citation or summons to enter a plea. Failure to respond results in an arrest warrant. A person facing that issue should call the issuing court before appearing and ask for the docket number, status, response instructions, bail information if relevant, and whether counsel can arrange the next step. Online payment alone should not be assumed to recall a warrant.
The public UJS docket may include a warrant-related entry, but it is not a complete, live warrant search. Pennsylvania's Statewide Warrants application is restricted to authorized court personnel. Sealed, juvenile, and search warrants are not ordinarily confirmed to the public. After a court resolves a warrant, confirm that the judge entered the recall and the executing agency received it.
